‘He Was A Selfless Leader’: Filmmaker AM Nandakumar Fondly Remembers Late Vijayakanth
AM Nandakumar recently came to pay his last respects to Vijayakanth and spoke highly of the late leader.

Vijayakanth, fondly known as Captain, passed away on December 28, 2023. His demise left the industry shaken, with everyone mourning his loss. Vijayakanth, aged 71 years, was the founder and leader of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). He succumbed to Covid-19 in Chennai. His mortal remains were placed at the DMDK office, so that actors, political figures and well-wishers could pay their respects. The death of Captain left many in complete shock. Fans, celebrities and politicians thronged at his place to pay their last tribute to the man. Vijayakanth was known to be a selfless leader, whose generosity often helped the poor and underprivileged of the society. Vijayakanth’s death left many heartbroken and in tears. One such person is Thennavan director, AM Nandakumar. Recently, AM Nandakumar came to pay his last respects and spoke highly of the late leader.

During a media interaction with News18, AM Nandakumar revealed that Vijayakanth is the perfect example of humanity. He shared that the actor used to sit down with junior artists and ordinary actors and interact with them on set. As per him, the Captain also used to believe that everyone should get the same food that is offered to him. AM Nandakumar further added that if he ever spotted someone, he would immediately come down and talk to them.

AM Nandakumar recalled an incident of the late actor. He shared that once Vijayakanth saw him arriving at a place on a two-wheeler, where the director was a part of a movie. Immediately, he came up to the director and asked, “Why are you coming on a bike? Why is there no car in our production company? Why are the directors wandering around on a bike? He also shouted at all the managers in that office. He then said that immediately, three cars were made available right outside his door.

AM Nandakumar said that the actor-politician did not boast about sending a car, but the incident and his thoughtful gesture touched the hearts of the viewers. He tearfully added that Captain is a “gentleman” whom the artists trusted very much and he also kept them safe.
