Dakota Johnson, renowned for her diverse roles since her breakthrough in the Fifty Shades franchise, continues to impress audiences with her film choices. Now, she has finally stepped into the world of superheroes, as Johnson is set to make her mark in the upcoming Marvel movie, Madame Web, slated to release on February 14. Ahead of the film’s release, the actress said she put all her trust in director SJ Clarkson and shared insights about her experience working with blue screens for CGI effects. Playing Cassandra Webb in this superhero thriller within Sony’s Spider-Man universe, Johnson described the process saying it was absolutely psychotic and questioned her performance during this unique filming experience.

Talking about the director and her whole experience, Johnson told Entertainment Weekly, “I trusted her so much. I’ve never really done a movie where you are on a blue screen and there’s fake explosions going off and someone’s going, ‘Explosion’ and you act like there’s an explosion. That, to me, was absolutely psychotic. I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is going to be good at all. I hope that I did an okay job.’ But I trusted her. She works so hard and she has not taken her eyes off this movie since we started.”

Dakota Johnson further shared that she has developed a newfound appreciation for action scenes involving explosions and car crashes while working on Madame Web. She mentioned one of her favourite moments was when the stunt team crashed a taxi into a diner. While Johnson expressed genuine excitement about the sequence, she jokingly felt regrets about not being able to personally drive the taxi into the diner, as there were safety concerns for the lead actor, “unless you’re Tom Cruise.”

The upcoming Marvel movie is part of Sony’s expanding universe, which includes films like Venom, Morbius and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter. The director, SJ Clarkson, spoke about the importance of crafting Madame Web as an independent story, separate from other interconnected narratives. Clarkson chose to concentrate on the present rather than the future. She thanked the production for the creative freedom to let the movie evolve naturally without forcing it into a predetermined mold. This approach allowed her to bring a fresh and original perspective.

Apart from Dakota Johnson’s lead role as Cassandra Webb, Madame Web also features Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, also known as Spider-Woman, followed by Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims, Celeste O’Connor joins the cast as Mattie Franklin, another Spider-Woman character and Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, also known as Arana.
