In a big setback for the Congress in Maharashtra ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Monday resigned from the primary membership of the party. The former Congress leader was reportedly unhappy with the Congress party’s decisions in the state.
The leader, however, has not confirmed his next political move. While speaking to the media, Chavan said that he will decide on his move over the next two days.
“I will clarify my political stand in the next two days. As of now, I have not decided to join the BJP. I have no complaints about the Congress party or its leaders. However, I am considering exploring other options, which is why I have resigned from the party,” said Chavan said after resigning from Congress.
“I hereby submit my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress Party with effect from 12/02/2024 noon,” Chavan said in a statement.
Chavan met Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar in Mumbai on Monday and submitted his resignation. Meanwhile, several top BJP leaders have also arrived at the saffron party’s Mumbai Pradesh Office, sources reported.
Addressing reporters, Chavan said that he has not decided on future course of action. “I have not had a word with a single MLA of Congress party. I have resigned from the Assembly membership as an MLA. I have given my resignation to the Speaker. I have resigned from the Congress Working Committee and Congress primary membership. I have not decided to join any party. I will clear my stand on joining a party after two days,” he said.

Notably, the development came days after former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique joined Ajit Pawar’s NCP on Saturday, breaking his 48-year-long association with the Congress party. The Maharashtra minister resigned from the from the grand old party on Thursday with immediate effect.
Earlier in January 2024, Congress leader Milind Deora also submitted his resignation from the primary membership of Congress, bringing an end to his family’s 55-year association with the party.
Who is Ashok Chavan?
Chavan had succeeded Vilasrao Deshmukh as Maharashtra Chief Minister back in December 2008, however, he was forced to resign in November 2010 in wake of the Adarsh housing scam.
He also served as the president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) from 2014 to 2019.
